Already EV ready?
You do not need a special Electric Vehicle charger to charge an EV: you can start with a normal three pin socket (also known as a General Power Outlet or GPO). This is called “Level 1” charging but is very slow: from empty it could take over 30 hours - more than a day - to charge an EV! But it’s often better than nothing and your guests may be grateful to have it if there are few faster charging options around.
Or you might choose to have a licensed electrician install a “Level 2” charger, which can charge between about four and 12 times faster than a normal three pin plug (depending on whether the power supply to your listing is “single phase” or “three phase” - ask your electrician. If it will be located outdoors, ensure you get a weather-rated charger.
But beware, there’s a lot to think about before offering EV charging to your guests, so please check out the links below and read through the information.
Please get in touch if you have additional questions or suggestions for how we can improve this information! We’d love to hear about your EV charging experiences, either as hosts or guests.
