Energy efficient homes

Before you consider any electrical upgrades to your home, make sure it is as insulated and well sealed as possible. This will save you money, make it healthier and more comfortable to live in and ensure that when you do make any any other electrical upgrades the benefits will be maximised. Here are some simple steps you can take to ensure your home is as energy efficient as possible.

How to improve the efficiency of your home

  • Check for draughts around windows, doors, vents, chimneys, and skirting boards and seal them. Even a few hours with a caulking gun can make a big difference!

    • Take a look and see what rebates are available to cover the costs. Check here for national support. Do also check with your local council to see if they offer additional incentives.

  • Add insulation to the roof, underfloor and walls if possible.

  • Swap out incandescent (old style bulbs), halogen and fluorescent lightning for efficient LED lighting. This draws less power, lasts longer and creates less heat.

  • Review your window treatments. Upgrade to thermal backed curtains with a pelmet - they tend to perform better than blinds particularly if they are full length and cover the wall on both sides of the window.

  • Consider getting a home efficiency scorecard. This will give you the best information about the issues with your home and what you can do to improve your efficiency. Typical cost is $250 to $500.

Encourage guests to reduce energy usage

We have designed a mini poster for you! Print it out at home or take it to your local print centre. There are three sizes:

Pop it on the back of the front door so guests see it on their way out for the day!

Add to your House Manual:

  • Let your guests know that you have posted a reminder for them on the back of the front door to close windows and doors, close window coverings, turn off all lights and turn off all heating and cooling. You may like to add the following:

“To reduce energy usage we have posted a simple reminder on the back of the front door.”
