Buying renewable electricity

The largest source of household emissions comes from the power we use. By switching to a renewable energy provider who generates energy from solar, wind or hydro we can dramatically reduce the emissions our homes create and accelerate investment in the transition to clean energy in our grid. How do I find a reputable renewable energy provider?

Switch to a renewable energy provider.

  • Green power products are available from many energy retailers, so you may be able to change plans with your existing retailers. For more information look up the Greenpeace Green Electricity Guide for information on electricity retailers with the best plans backed by renewable generation.

  • To look for an accredited renewable energy provider try looking at https://www.greenelectricityguide.org.au/

  • To compare costs look at https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

  • To check if you are on a green power plan there should an extra line to your bill with the green power option to it.

  • Be sure to avoid plans that offer “Carbon Neutral Plans” as this is not the same. Typically, carbon neutral power plans are backed with cheap offset credits that might not do anything to reduce emissions, rather than being used to construct new renewables projects.

  • Add to your House Manual:
Let your guests know that you have taken steps to reduce the emissions your home creates by switching to a renewable energy provider. You may like to add the following:

“To reduce the emissions our home creates we buy our power from a 100% renewable energy provider.”
